Under the Obama administration, the U.S. proclaimed a “pivot to Asia”. Donald Trump’s Asia policy, however, was mostly marked by conflict and rifts with Asia: with Japan over TPP, South Korea over how much the country needed to pay for U.S. troops, and with China over almost everything, from tariffs to technology. (He did try to improve relations with North Korea for a while.)
With the U.S. primaries in full swing, we’ll discuss what kind of Asia policy the Democratic frontrunners endorse; what a second Trump term would mean for Asia; and which challenges the region holds for whoever occupies the White House as of 2021.
Asia Society Switzerland in cooperation with Credit Suisse will host the Hon. Kevin Rudd, former Prime Minister of Australia and President of the Asia Society Policy Institute based in New York.
